How to Clean a Smartphone

Learning how to clean a smartphone is essential. Think about how many times a day you use your smartphone. It’s likely at your side, in your hand, and under your fingertips almost constantly. It’s inevitable that it will get dirty. Dust, grease, grime, and grit seem to almost be magically attracted to smartphone screens! Cleaning your smartphone regularly provides you with the best possible user experience. Plus, if you ever want to sell a device, it’s important to keep it clean and operating smoothly. So how do you clean a smartphone?

The most essential tool for cleaning your smartphone is a microfiber cloth. Microfiber cloths are made up of extremely thin synthetic fibers―less than 1/5 the width of a human hair! They are used to clean all sorts of delicate surfaces such as computer monitors, glasses, and photographic lenses. Paper towels are a big no-no. Any sort of paper-based towel has the potential to scratch the surface of your smart phone and will diminish usability over time.

To clean most grease and dust off your smartphone screen, first remove the case so you can access the full surface area of the screen. Then simply take one corner of the dry microfiber cloth and use small circular movements to clean a single section of the screen. Proceed to the next and then the next until you have a completely clean smartphone screen. For more stubborn messes like heavy grease or makeup, you may want to add water to clean your smartphone screen. First, make sure that your device is turned off. Then dampen one corner of the microfiber cloth in warm water and clean the surface with the same circular motion. Then proceed to use a dry corner of the microfiber cloth to dry and buff the screen. Your phone should be looking like new in no time.

It’s important to know, however, to never use an alcohol-based cleaner on your smartphone. Many touch screen devices have a special chemical coating that helps to protect them. Using alcohol-based cleaners can deteriorate that coating over time. There are a number of alcohol-free cleaners designed for use with smartphones and other touchscreen devices. You can easily find them on-line. You can find complete phone cleaning kits on-line as well. These typically feature a selection of microfiber cloths and specialty cleaning solutions, often in sizes that are convenient for travelling.

Finally, don’t forget that cleaning your smartphone means more than just cleaning the screen. Use the same techniques described in the above sections to clean the rest of the smart phone. Consider using a cotton swab with a specialty cleaner to get into all the nooks and crannies. Also, don’t forget to clean your phone case, both inside and out. Smartphone cases are generally made of sturdy materials that can stand up to everyday cleaning techniques.
