How to Erase Your iPhone

If you’re selling your iPhone, trading it in, or giving it away, knowing how to erase an iPhone is a helpful way to ensure your personal information doesn’t end up in someone else’s hands. Let Trademore break down the steps to wipe an iPhone.

How to erase your data from your iPhone

  1. Before you do anything, be sure to back up your iPhone. This will guarantee you have the most up to date version of your phone saved to iCloud
  2. Locate the Settings app from the Home screen
  3. Tap on General
  4. Scroll to the bottom of the page to locate Reset
  5. Select Erase All Content and Settings
  6. Tap on Erase Now
  7. You will be prompted for your Passcode
  8. If your iPhone was activated on Find My iPhone, you may have to enter your Apple ID password to remove it

After these simple steps, you’re finished! Erasing an iPhone is as easy as that. It can now be set up as a new iPhone by someone else or restored from a different backup.

On the other hand, if your iPhone is lost or stolen and you don’t want your information to be accessible to anyone who might have it, you may be able to wipe an iPhone remotely following these steps:

Erase your iPhone remotely with Find my iPhone

  1. If you previously set up Find My iPhone on the lost or stolen phone, open the Find iPhone app from another iOS device such as an iPad, a friend’s phone, or a computer’s web browser by visiting icloud.com
  2. Go to the Devices tab and select the phone you would like to erase
  3. Select Erase This Device and confirm by selecting Erase This iPhone when prompted
  4. You may be asked if you’d like to provide your phone number and a message to display on the screen when the iPhone powered on so if someone finds the phone they can contact you. Enter this information if you choose to do so
  5. Select Erase
  6. Enter your Apple ID Password to confirm

Whether you’re getting a new phone or lost yours on the subway, we hope these steps come in handy the next time you may have to erase an iPhone. Stay tuned to the Trademore blog for additional tips and tricks for your iOS devices.
