How Do I Cancel an App Subscription on an iPhone?

We all have them—app subscriptions that we no longer want, use or have simply forgotten about. Whether a free trial is ending, or your interests have changed, you may want to cancel an app subscription on an iPhone. Cancelling app subscriptions might seem confusing, but don’t worry, it’s actually quite simple. Read on to get the scoop about managing your subscriptions on your iPhone.

Cancelling an App Subscription on your iPhone:

To cancel and remove an app subscription from your iPhone:

  • Go to Settings from your iPhone home screen
  • Find your name at the top of the screen
  • Tap on “Subscriptions
  • Choose the subscription you want to cancel and tap on it
  • Select “Cancel Subscription” or “Cancel Free Trial” at the bottom
  • A message will inform you that your subscription will expire, if you cancel.
  • Tap confirm — the subscription has been canceled and you’re all set.

Please note, just deleting an app will not cancel your subscription. You must follow the steps spelled out above in order the cancel it.

What should you do if you can’t find the app subscription you want to cancel?

Don’t see the subscription that you're looking for? Try this.

  • Make sure your subscription is billed by Apple. Check your credit card/bank statement. If the charge is not from iTunes or Apple, the subscription might be from a company other than Apple. Then contact that company.
  • Check with a family member. Have that person try to change or cancel the subscription on their own devices or when they're signed in with their Apple ID. That’s because only they will be able to check on or cancel a subscription by following the same steps when signed into their Apple ID.
  • See if the subscription is from a different Apple ID. You can view subscriptions for another Apple ID, by signing in with that Apple ID and then following the same steps spelled out above.
  • If you are still having issues or need assistance, you can always contact Apple Support

There is one final option for cancelling an app subscription: by email. If you saved the confirmation email that was sent to you when you first subscribed to the app, you can get to the necessary subscription window even quicker. Click on the link to review your subscription found in the email. An Edit Subscription window will pop up, so you can now review and cancel the subscription.

Make sure you get the most from your existing subscription

Remember: you can use your existing subscription, or free trial, until it expires. So, don’t cancel an app subscription until that time period is over. And be sure to review which subscriptions you have and ensure they are active or close to expiring.

Most app subscriptions will automatically renew themselves. But you can avoid paying for unwanted app subscriptions. Just be sure to cancel the subscription at least 24 hours before the trial ends. Otherwise, your subscription may renew automatically before the cancellation is processed.
